Arul Rhik Mazumder

Hello, my name is Rhik, and I am a current undergraduate student at Carnegie Mellon University studying Computer Science. In addition to my primary degree, I am currently pursuing concentrations in Machine Learning and Algorithms/Complexity. My academic and career goals center on quantum computing, machine learning, and quantitative finance, and I aim to explore and design innovative interdisciplinary systems that bridge these fields, with a long-term interest in research and entrepreneurial applications.

As a member of the Carnegie Mellon Quantum Technologies Group, I’ve had the privilege of working on research projects under the guidance of Dr. Sridhar Tayur. Since high school, I have also collaborated extensively on theoretical computer science research with Dr. Fei Li at the George Mason University Algorithms Lab. In addition, I am the founder and inaugural president of Carnegie Mellon Quantum Computing, the university’s first student-led organization dedicated to quantum computing.

This summer, I will be participating in the Caltech SURF program as a research intern under Samson Wang and John Preskill. My research will focus developing quantum algorithms with provable runtime guarantees using Trotterization and classical postprocessing, enabling efficient function compilation—including the Heaviside step—for tasks like ground state energy estimation. This work generalizes recent advances in observable estimation and expands applications in quantum simulation of physical systems.

Outside of academics, I enjoy fencing, playing puzzle and strategy games, and watching movies.
Check out my website, and feel free to reach out if anything interests you. I always enjoy meeting new people and working on cool projects.
